Mike Venables is a Senior Principal Consultant with atmaana. Mike works with atmaana’s clients to provide them with strategic advice and Defence sector domain expertise.
Prior to joining the consulting sector, Mike spent 27 years in a high profile career working for the Ministry of Defence (MOD), focusing on strategy development, planning, budgeting and project management.
As a Senior Civil Servant in the MOD, Mike held a wide range of Director appointments in the policy, procurement, legal, and management spheres. He served in Kosovo and Afghanistan, in both cases negotiating the initial entry of NATO forces, and held a range of finance, personnel and project management roles. His specific responsibilities have included the management of the MOD’s £32Bn annual budget and acting as Secretary to the Defence Management Board and the Defence Audit Committee. Furthermore, he has project managed a £5Bn procurement competition and handled Judicial Reviews relating to Iraq and inquests into service deaths.
Since 2013, Mike has successfully translated his skills in leadership, performance and risk management, government finance and PFIs to the private sector. Mike has considerable experience in leading and mentoring teams to develop vision and strategy and turning them into effective business plans. He is well-versed in developing and leading change initiatives and designing business solutions in the Defence sector. He has successfully applied these skills to Board development and assessment, impact assessment, efficiency and governance issues and bid development. He has worked with a range of blue chip Defence sector businesses on both strategy and winning business with the MOD.
Mike was awarded an OBE in 2000 and made a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers in 2008.
